Top 10 most populated cities in the World: Lagos, Jakarta, Delhi and more!

From Lagos to Tokyo, from Istanbul to Beijing. Here is the list of the top ten cities in the world in terms of population.

10. Mumbai

The city of Mumbai is home to many inspiring writers such as Rudyard Kipling (the author of The Jungle Book). With over 12.4 million people living in Mumbai, it is not only one of the most populated cities, but also the most cramped city in the world due to its size! I personally wouldn't want to travel in Mumbai during rush hour, I've seen videos & trust me, it's not good!

9. Guangzhou

Guangzhou, the third largest city in China (with 13 million people) was first known as Canton (even though I can't pronounce the word 'Guangzhou' I'm happy it was changed, it sounds cool). Over the years, this city became the capital of China not once, not twice, but three times! First between 1925-1927, a couple months in 1931 & another couple of months in 1949. The capital was then again changed to another city on this list. 

8. Tokyo

Now, I know you were expecting this to be higher on this list (so was I)..But it's not!! It's eighth. With 13.5 million people living in this wonderful city, the residents have been able to advance to another way of commuting on busy trains. I'm sure you've seen the viral video of people being shoved into a train that's already full! Crazy right? But it doesn't stop there, there are in fact more people in the older generation living in Japan than younger. This is due to people not having as much..sex like back in the day! Leading to a decline across the country over the past 20 years. I'll most likely do another article about what people in Japan do differently than other cultures soon! 

7. Istanbul

The wonderful city of Istanbul is the only city in the world that is in two continents (Asia and Europe). Istanbul was once known as the most crowded city in the world in the early 1500s, now today with over 14 million people in the city, it has still not once hosted an Olympic game!

6. Karachi

Karachi, is the capital of Sindh (in Pakistan). With nearly 15 million people in the city, it is the second largest city in the 'Muslim World' and one of the most caring I'd say. With over 1800 ambulances, 28 rescue boats and 2 airplanes, Karachi hold the title to the largest voluntary ambulance service in the World! 

5. Tianjin

Tianjin, also in China. With a population of 15.2 million, Tianjin has made it to the top 5 most populated cities! After the having 12 million people in 2015, Tianjing is one of the fastest growing cities in the world (overtaking the very busy Tokyo city and Istanbul). 

4. Lagos

Lagos! Lagos (in Nigeria) currently has over 16 million people living in the economical hub. Lagos holds the record for the most populated city in the whole of Africa, though it doesn't stop there. Lagos also hosts the longest bridge in the continent, stretching as far as 11.8km (7.3 miles) long. I cannot forget to mention Africa's most popular film industry Nollywood (Nigerian Hollywood) is centered in Lagos, nearly all acting scenes in movies based in Nigeria are from Lagos. 

3. Delhi

Admit it, India is a beautiful country, with an exhilarating culture. Delhi has made it into the third spot of the list with 16.7 million people living in the very busy city. The picture above displays houses....a lot of houses, but actually Dehli is one of the greenest cities in the world! With 20% of its land mass being covered by forests and with their entire transport system running on natural gas, awesome right? 

2. Beijing

Beijing, the city with many attractions including the famous 'Great wall of China' & the Olympic stadium. This city hits second place on the list with over 21.5 million people, leaving a huge gap between 2nd and 3rd place! If you plan to visit Beijing (the capital of China), the best times to go would be in May or October, this is so you can a peaceful experience avoiding the national holiday period (why travel with everyone else when you can travel at random times of the year?).

OK, so China has been on this list three times already, can they possibly be at number one spot or will India take the lead with the most populated city? Now onto the number 1 spot...

1. Shanghai 

China has made it on this list again! With a population of 24.2 million living in the city, Shanghai tops the list as the most populated city in the world! I would give Shanghai a medal but I can't afford to buy you one, so you can have a cheeky smile instead... :) . Shanghai is full of beautifully tall buildings and people who are into business and finance (Shanghai is one of the world financial centers), but let this not distract you. When the sun goes down, Chinese people can and will get down and dirty! The nightlife in Shanghai is just as amazing as Miami when the sun goes and the moon comes! Below are some more interesting facts about China.

From 2013, people in China can only have 1 child.

NEVER drink tap water in China, always get bottled. 

It is rude to write a letter or someone's name using a red pen.

It is also rude to suck or bite on your chopstick..and weird too

People in China don't use Google, Facebook or Instagram.

Of course, just because other cities aren't on this list it doesn't mean there are not a lot of people living there. With Moscow (12.3 million) in 11th place and Jakarta (10.0 million people) in 15th place, we'll never know which city will come into the top 10 list in 5 years' time!
